A thoughtful conversation.
A clearer path forward.
Hormone-related concerns can feel personal and complicated. At 401 Medical Center, start with time to explain what you’re experiencing, ask questions, and understand your options.
Explore whether a hormone evaluation is appropriate and how a treatment plan could fit your needs. We’ll help you review the practical details before you decide.

What are compounded hormone creams?
These are prescription preparations made by a compounding pharmacy for an individual patient. The prescribed hormone ingredients, strength, and cream base depend on the clinical need.
Compounding may help meet a specific need that an available FDA-approved product cannot meet, such as an ingredient allergy or an unavailable dosage form. Ask why a compounded preparation is being considered for you and which approved alternatives are available.
Start with your concerns
Share your symptoms, priorities, and previous treatment experiences.
Understand the options
Discuss the reason for treatment, alternatives, and the proposed prescription.
Plan for follow-up
Ask how response, side effects, and the need for continued treatment will be reviewed.
An important distinction
Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. They have not been shown to be safer or more effective than FDA-approved hormone therapies.
For menopausal symptoms, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends FDA-approved hormone therapy over compounded preparations when suitable approved options exist.
“Bioidentical” describes a hormone’s chemical structure; it does not establish that a compounded product is safer. Some FDA-approved hormone products are also bioidentical.
Make your consultation count
Bring your history
Share your medications, supplements, allergies, prior prescriptions, and relevant laboratory results.
Ask about the prescription
Confirm the ingredients, strength, intended benefit, application instructions, dispensing pharmacy, and costs.
Know the review plan
Ask when to follow up, what to report, and how prescription changes or refills will be handled.
Answers to common questions
Is a hormone cream right for everyone?
No. The decision depends on the reason for treatment, health history, and individual risks. Discuss your circumstances and all available options with your provider.
Which hormones and strengths do you offer?
Ask the clinic about available formulations. Your provider must assess the clinical need before selecting any prescription.
How do I use a prescribed cream?
Follow the exact label and provider or pharmacist instructions. Ask where and when to apply it, how to measure the dose, and what precautions prevent accidental exposure of others.
What risks should I discuss?
Risks depend on the hormones, dose, route, and your health. Compounding can also introduce quality and dosing concerns. Ask for ingredient-specific side effects, precautions, and guidance on when to seek care.
Will I need laboratory testing?
Your provider will decide whether testing is useful for your evaluation and follow-up. Ask what each test is intended to assess and how it will inform your care.
What will it cost?
Contact the clinic for current consultation, testing, prescription, and follow-up costs. Ask whether the pharmacy bills separately and how refills are arranged.
