What is therapeutic ultrasound?

Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves delivered through a handheld applicator and coupling gel. It may be considered as part of care for selected soft-tissue concerns.

This page describes a treatment service. Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images for medical assessment; contact the clinic if you need help finding an imaging service.

Assessment first

Discuss your symptoms and health history before considering treatment.

A focused conversation

Ask what the proposed treatment is intended to address and why it fits your condition.

A plan for review

Agree on how progress will be assessed and when another approach may be needed.

Your goals matter

What is discomfort keeping you from doing? What have you already tried? What would meaningful improvement look like to you?

Use your consultation to discuss these questions, review alternatives, and understand the expected commitment. Ask your provider about the evidence for ultrasound for your particular condition. Improvement is not guaranteed.

What to expect at your visit

1. Talk & assess

Review symptoms, previous care, medical conditions, and the area of concern.

2. Understand the session

If appropriate, gel and a handheld applicator are used over the selected area. Tell your provider immediately about discomfort.

3. Review next steps

Ask about activity guidance, follow-up, and how the treatment fits with other recommended care.

Questions to bring to your consultation

Is ultrasound appropriate for my pain?

Suitability depends on the cause of your symptoms and your medical history. Your provider will assess the concern and explain whether ultrasound, another treatment, or further evaluation makes sense.

What should I tell the provider before treatment?

Mention pregnancy, implanted devices, circulation problems or blood clots, cancer, recent infection or bleeding, changes in skin sensation, and skin problems near the area. These can affect suitability.

What does it feel like?

You may notice the gel and applicator on your skin. Report pain, unusual warmth, or other discomfort immediately so your provider can respond.

How many visits will I need?

Ask for a proposed schedule, the reason for it, and a clear review point. Treatment frequency depends on your condition and response.

Can this be part of a broader care plan?

Ask how ultrasound would fit with other recommendations, such as activity guidance or rehabilitation, and whether a referral is appropriate.

What does it cost?

Contact the clinic for current session pricing and consultation costs. Confirm appointment length, availability, and what is included before booking.
